The aesthetic fallacy


Hard scientists love to project concepts like elegance and beauty on simple equations like E = mc². A revealing choice perhaps, but also quite absurd. Economic use of symbols is really about compressing a body of theory and data to its absolute limit. But if beauty = max compression, the most beautiful painting would be 100% abstract.

Joe Power vs. Unforeseen Circumstances

Joe Power (a.k.a. The Man Who Sees Dead People) is a psychic/medium. According to his website Joe's psychic ability includes "mind-boggling visions, out-of-body travels, auras, premonitions and a motley array of constant spirit visitors. He possesses the full array of psychic skills including clairvoyance, clairaudience and clairsentience."

Schoenmaekers and Mondriaan - positively mystifying

Mathieu Schoenmaekers (1875–1944) is remembered as the philosopher behind the Dutch art movement De Stijl, made world famous by Piet Mondriaan. Here's a short account of how this happened: in 1910 the philosophically inclined Schoenmaekers (a former Catholic priest) came up with a new religious view. He called it Plastic mathematics or Positive mysticism, the word ‘positive’ meaning scientific.
